Chapter 7 – Reality

It doesn’t make sense!

The equations that drive quantum mechanics work amazingly well but they are not derived from physical mechanisms in the classical sense.

Famous physicists have commented on quantum mechanics not making sense:

We cannot make the mystery go away by explaining how it works. We will just tell you how it works” Richard Feynman

“Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded as real” Niels Bohr

“If quantum mechanics hasn’t profoundly shocked you, you haven’t understood it yet” Niels Bohr

“The theory of quantum electrodynamics describes Nature as absurd from the point of view of common sense… So I hope you accept Nature as She is absurd” Richard Feynman

“If you are not completely confused by quantum mechanics, you do not understand it” John Wheeler

Big Idea

Quantum mechanics is deeply counterintuitive!
The best we can do is accept that quantum mechanics describes how the world operates
